Two of our better players failed to appear and so we left M&S with just a bare 11 and no oranges. Having got stuffed the last time we played Walkern at home, we decided to pack the midfield with 5 in an attempt to keep the score down to single figures. It actually worked quite well and had it not been for some shite passing on a cold, sticky pitch in the first half, we we may have caused an upset.

Walkern were taking it easy but were still as bloody good as usual, spreading it around, passing etc etc but they failed to finish when it mattered. Gary and Simon coped well in the middle and Paul and Flipper did just enough at the back against some nifty wingers.

We pressed forward once or twice with the wind behind us and even hit the post. Gary had a fine strike saved at full stretch and Marc also came close - all in quick succession but that was about it from us all first half.

Walkern inevitably took the lead on 30 minutes. A break down our left was fed forwards and the ball was tapped in at the foot of the far post by a blue shirt to put them 1-0 up. He must have been miles off-side and even the original through ball looked iffy but the goal stood and that was that.

Walkern got their second on the hour as their cross from the left was superbly controlled and volleyed in from 10 yards all in one deft move. No argument with that one.

This is where we normally go to pieces and concede a further 5 goals. But not this time. We hung on courageously at the back despite Walkern piling on the pressure. They hit the bar, missed some sitters and brought Andy into the game with some useful keeping to just about keep our hopes alive. And then, against the run of play, Marc broke clear with 5 minutes left a smashed in a rocket from the right of their box. An even better finish than their second.

Not a bad effort lads and actually one of our more impressive results against the mighty Walkern. One day we'll have 'em!

PS: Tell Sid about the decent showers!
