Our make-shift 11 took on a Garibaldi side full of giants, which was
great since we were lacking height in all departments this week. We highjacked
one of their reasonable players to allow Mikey to ref most of the game. Marc
arrived late but didn't play since it was too cold!
We started facing the wrong end but played reasonably well against what
turned out to be tricky opposition. Pen came close on 10 minutes but we lacked
any real creativity in front of goal nor could we capitalise from our handful
of corners.
Garibaldi spread it around up front and forced plenty of corners
themselves before hitting the far post. We held out fairly well until they
broke clear and blasted in the top corner from 14 yards for a well taken opener
on 25 minutes.
We conceded yet more corners and soaked up more pressure at the back but
let in our second from another corner as they scored from a free header 10
yards out despite efforts on the line by Paul M to clear.
We persevered down the left and some great crosses by Pen put their
defence under pressure, with John coming close as he connected from 10 yards.
Then Pen went on a solo run and finished exquisitely from a chip into the net
from outside their area 5 minutes before half time and we were back with a
shout.
Second half was fairly even stuff. They certainly won more corners but
we managed a few good spells on the left. Then Paul M got tangled up with a
blue shirt chasing a sideways ball across our area and was deemed to have
tripped their geezer up - "Penalty!" shouted Mikey from the half way
line and they made it 3 on the hour with a cool finish just inside the foot of
the post.
However, all was not lost. Some fine midfield work led to some useful
play up front and then Flipper came surging forward from right back and slammed
in a loose ball from 12 yards to pull it back to 2-3 with 20 minutes remaining.
(Claims by the opposition and other witnesses that it must have been John to
have finished so well were quickly denied by Flipper in the showers
afterwards)!
But we continued to live dangerously at the back. Some nervous defending
culminated with Garibaldi coming close twice at the far post before hitting our
bar. They finally secured their forth 5 minutes from time as a pair of blue
shirts turned us inside out in our six yard box to put the game beyond our
reach.
